79-Year-Old Nigerian Grandma Becomes A University Graduate In Katsina State

Hajiya-Fatima-640x431@2x

Following years of apparent fantasy and dogged ambition to wear an academic gown and own a degree certificate from a university, a 79-year-old woman has now fulfilled that dream as she was among 1,678 graduates of Al-Qalam University in Katsina, Katsina State.
Hajiya Fatima Kurfi, a mother of four with over 20 grandchildren, was among those called upon to receive their various degrees at the university’s convocation, which was held last week.
Daily Trust gathered that ‘Mama Kurfi’, as she is fondly called by course-mates, was admitted into the university in 2005 and graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Islamic Studies in 2009, but her convocation ceremony was deferred, with others’, till last week when the university held its maiden convocation for seven sets that have passed through the institute.
To Mama Kurfi, age is no barrier to seeking education, as it is a very important tool for life. “An uneducated person is not complete. Even if he tries other ventures like business, his lack of education will limit him greatly,” she said.
Speaking to Daily Trust, she said: “When I was young, there used to be a primary school in Kurfi town were all my peers went, but I was not among them. After I got married, my husband started to teach me how to read and write, and it was with this I was able to guide my children,”
Mama Kurfi said, when her husband left for England and she joined him there, her spoken English improved greatly during the almost three years she spent there.
“During my stay there, I tried to do something about my education but could not. Upon my return to the country, I took up the challenge to get the formal education as all this time I was still doing my informal teaching and learning processes,” she said.

Fayose Warns Fulani Herdsmen Over Attack On Ekiti Communities

Fulaniherdsman1

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has warned that there could be reprisal attacks on Fulani herdsmen in the State if they do not desist from invading communities in Ekiti and attacking the people, describing the Fulani herdsmen that invaded Oke Ako in Ikole local government area of the State on Friday, killing two residents of the town and injuring others as “agents of the devil that must be fished out and punished accordingly.” Governor Fayose, who commiserated with the people of Oke-Ako, especially the family of the deceased, vowed to do everything humanly possible to forestall the reoccurrence of such attack and safeguard the lives of Ekiti people. According to a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose said the Fulani herdsmen were becoming major threat to the unity of Nigeria and its people, saying; “I will not fold my hands while armed herdsmen invade communities in Ekiti, killing people and destroying farmlands at will as they have done in other States. “I have directed the police and other security agencies in the State to fish out the killer herdsmen. I am in constant touch with the security agencies and I hope that the killer herdsmen will be fished out wherever they are and made to face the full wrath of the law. “The people of Oke-Ako should therefore remain calm while the security agents do their job. However, the security agents must be mindful of the fact that the people’s patience has a limit and they must therefore act promptly and decisively.” The governor, who described activities of the Fulani Herdsmen as inimical to the revival of agriculture in the country said; “Farmlands costing billions of naira have been destroyed in States in the South-West, South-East and North-Central zones of the country. One wonders how Nigerians can go back to farming when those already in the farms are losing billions of naira worth of crops to destruction of their farmlands by the Fulani Herdsmen and the Federal Government is not doing anything about it.” He said; “I am sounding a note of warning to the Fulani herdsmen and those who can talk to them should also do so now. If they continue with these wanton attacks, killing of the people and destruction of farmlands in Ekiti, I cannot guarantee that there won’t be reprisal attacks. “I can also not guarantee the level that the reprisal attacks can get to because as a governor, it is my responsibility to defend and protect my people.” He called on President Mohammadu Buhari to stop paying lips service to the Fulani herdsmen’s menace, saying “as patron of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), President Buhari has the capacity to call the herdsmen to order. “President Buhari should therefore call his people to order because this is Ekiti; our people have the rights to defend themselves. “Most importantly, President Buhari must be reminded of how he was so concerned about the killing of Fulani herdsmen in in Saki, Oke Ogun Area of Oyo State such that he, as a private citizen led Arewa to Ibadan on October 13, 2000, to confront the then Governor of Oyo State, late Alhaji Lam Adesina.”

Boko Haram Willing To Discuss Surrender And Release Of Chibok Girls

Islamic extremist militants Boko Haram, who have killed at least 2,600 people in Nigeria, reportedly want to broker a deal with the government to release the remaining kidnapped Chibok schoolgirls in return for escaping execution. Two hundred schoolgirls were seized from a school in Chibok two years ago and have never been traced or found. It is believed only a third of them remain alive. According to a report in The Times, senior members of the terrorist group told Nigerian newspaper Leadership Friday that it was prepared to negotiate a surrender and release the hostages on the condition they would not be not betrayed by the government or killed for giving up arms. “We want to surrender because things are getting worse,” said Amir Muhammad Abdullahi, who is reportedly Boko Haram’s second in command. He said no side was winning the battle and that only a third of the girls remained as “the rest have been martyred”. It comes as two Chibok girls have reportedly been released – one of whom called Amina Ali Darsha Nkeki who was found near Sambisa forest and believed to have been freed as a ‘gesture of good faith’ by the militants. However, there was confusion mounting over whether the second girl, (who has not been named), was freed in a raid on a Boko Haram camp on 19 May, was from Chibok. Yakubu Nkeke told The Times: “I can say in my capacity as the head of the Chibok Abducted Girls Parents group that this girl is not among the abducted girls.” Who are Nigeria’s Boko Haram terrorists? Boko Haram (recently renamed Iswap) fights against Western influence in Nigeria and aims to impose its version of Sharia law on the country. The group declared an Islamic caliphate in Gwoza, along the Cameroon border, in August 2014. Boko Haram has raided several cities in the north of the country in a bid to take control of more land. Three states − Adamawa, Borno and Yobe − have been under a state of emergency since May 2013, due to Boko Haram’s attacks. The group has killed at least 2,600 people since the beginning of 2015. More than 180 have been killed since the beginning of June. - See more at: http://www.naijaloaded.com.ng/2016/05/22/boko-haram-willing-discuss-surrender-release-chibok-girls/#sthash.VdKofMpt.dpuf

Dressing Of Masqurades Can Create 1000 Jobs Per Week For Young Nigerian Men – Lai Mohammed

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, says if masquerades were well packaged, dressing and undressing of the masquerades could provide 1000 jobs for some young Nigerian men. According to TheCable, Lai said this while speaking at the sectoral debate of the Federal House of Representative in Abuja today May 3rd;

“Most states today have more than one festival a year, but the packaging and lack of capacity has not enabled them to make the most out of these festivals. There’s a particular masquerade in the south east, it takes 100 people to dress him, another 100 people to undress him. If this masquerade is well-packaged, it can provide employment in one week for more than 1000 young men.

These are some of the untapped potentials. I worked in the airport for 10 years, and I know that if you want your passport stamped as a foreigner, you slip $100 into your passport.

No tourist would come back to a country where he has to bribe immigration to enter. No tourist would come to a country where, when he leaves immigration, he enters a ‘one-chance’ taxi or ‘one-chance’ bus. It’s a holistic problem and these are all contained in the national tourism master plan, which I would make available to the house. We must make a difference between tourist sites and tourist attractions; what we have in Nigeria are tourist sites.

They are not tourist attractions. You need infrastructure to convert a tourist site to a tourist attraction. If you don’t have infrastructure, it would always remain a tourist site, In Cross Rivers reserve park, Nigeria has the oldest forest in the whole world.

It is the oldest in terms of biodiversity, and we have this very rare, white-mane gorilla in that area, but because my people in Cross River have decided to turn them to bush meat, they have now escaped.”he said
