An Ile-Ife Customary Court in Osun on Tuesday dissolved a 21 year-old marriage over husband’s threat to kill his wife and battery. The Magistrate, Moses Owoyomi, held that after much appeal, which was refused by the couple, the marriage was dissolved with immediate effect. Owoyomi ordered that there shall be no refund of dowry and awarded custody of two children to the petitioner and one to the respondent.
The wife, Adetutu Adebisi, had urged the court to dissolve her marriage to her husband, Samson, for constant beating and improper care for her and her four children. Adetutu said that Samson did not give her peace of mind in the house as he threatened to kill her. “Our family helped us to settle our dispute whenever we fought. He won’t stop beating me.
“He used to throw my belongings out of the house, asking me to leave his house and never to come back,’’ she said. Samson, however, denied the allegations, and claimed that he only beat her whenever she failed to comply with his instructions.
“She is always the cause of our fights, her association with divorced women made me furious. I don’t beat her for no reason as she is claiming,’’ he said. While supporting the dissolution of the marriage, Samson said Adetutu had caused a lot of problems between him and members of his family.
